The top example is 1H2/Y21/S/10/USA/+AA4708.
This tells us that the package is a drum or pail, made of plastic, and of the open head variety. The Packing Group “Y” is acceptable for Packaging group II and III substances (medium and minor hazard); the maximum gross mass is 21 kg for solid contents. The container was manufactured in 2010 in the USA. The code for the manufacturing plant or testing facility for the package is +AA4708.
The bottom example is 1H2/Y1.5/30/10/USA/+AA4708.
This tells us that the package is a drum or pail, made of plastic, and of the open head variety. The Packing Group “Y” is acceptable for Packaging group II and III substances (medium and minor hazard); the maximum specific gravity is 1.5 for liquid contents; the estimated hydrostatic test pressure is 30. The container was manufactured in 2010 in the USA. The code for the manufacturing plant or testing facility for the package is +AA4708.
The Package Identification Code Contains 3 Characters (for open head or closed head single packagings). Each character has an assigned meaning. The first designates Package/Container Type. The second designates container Material. The third character designates category within type.
The packaging group level equivalent contains three sets of characters. The first designates the packaging group, while the next two character sets depend on whether the contents are solid or liquid.
Density or Specific Gravity: Stand-alone packagings intended to contain liquids must be marked with the specific gravity rounded down to the first decimal.
Mass: For packaging intended for Solids (powders, pills, capsules, tablets) or that have inner packaging, this marking will indicate the maximum gross mass (weight) in kilograms (of the entire tested unit).
Containers used for Solids or Inner Packaging have an “S” following the mass.
Liquid containers have the hydrostatic test pressure in kPa (kilopascals), rounded down to the nearest 10kPa.
